Starbucks has been ordered to pay its Californian baristas more than $US100 million in back tips that were instead paid to shift supervisors.
The shift supervisors at the coffee chain have also been issued with an injunction preventing them from sharing in future tips.
A Starbucks spokesperson said the company planned to appeal immediately, calling the ruling "fundamentally unfair and beyond all reason."
The lawsuit was filed in 2004 by a former barista who complained shift supervisors were sharing in employee tips.
The lawsuit was granted class action status in 2006 and it went forward for about 100,000 former and current baristas in Starbucks' California stores.
