Poland and US near deal on missile defence

Poland and the US drew closer to a breakthrough agreement yesterday on Washington's plans for a missile defence system on Polish soil after months of protracted -negotiation.

Poland's prime minister, Don-ald Tusk, has said he would agree to host the missile defence system only if Washington provided greater support for the Polish -military.

Speaking after a meeting with President George W. Bush, Mr Tusk expressed his hopes of reaching an agreement on missile defence, a signature US issue throughout Mr Bush's time in office. But he insisted that Washington needed to reciprocate if his government was to comply with the US request to locate missile interceptors on Polish territory. Public opinion is also opposed to the US project, according to polls.
