March 13 (Bloomberg) -- David Paterson overcame near blindness at infancy to graduate from an Ivy League college, complete law school and become a successful politician. That's just a prelude to the challenges he faces in his sudden elevation to be New York's next governor.
Thrust into office after Eliot Spitzer's resignation in a sex scandal, Lieutenant Governor Paterson, 53, will assume the top job March 17, giving him two weeks to meet a deadline for adopting a state budget. Getting legislative agreement on how to divide shrinking revenue in a slowing economy will test his reputation for affability and conciliation.
