Giving telecom immunity sets terrible precedent

President Bush is again urging lawmakers to pass the Senate version of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) surveillance law, which includes giving retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies. The House version of the bill does not include immunity for spying on customers without court warrants.

Why does President Bush want to give them immunity? He doesn't want us to know he persuaded these telecommunications companies to eavesdrop on phone calls and e-mails in March 2001, months earlier than Sept. 11, 2001.

Why? What are these companies hiding? Why should retroactive immunity be given to them? They broke the law and so did the Bush administration.
